Credit and debit card fraud at ATM’s or cash point machines as they are more commonly known, is constantly on the increase.  Credit card fraud is not just limited to ATM machines but can occur when making a purchase such as DC women’s shoes. How do you know if the ATM machine has been tampered with and by using it without due care and attention, you could end up being the next victim to  card fraud. We learn people talking about protect your pin, keep it covered when using your card at the ATM machine but we all probably become complacent, at looking at the machine and assume its ok, its not going to occur to me. Well guess what, it can so simply happen to you.

Have you thought if you have covered your pin suitably? I am usually more concerned about the people around me, who may be peering over my around me. Who is keeping an eye on me so that when I move away from the cashpoint, are they going to follow me? I have never been suspicious of using the machine and believe it is absolutely safe to use. Yes I couldn’t see them and wasn’t even mindful of anything.

The cashpoint machine looked perfectly ok,when out looking for a pair of Vans women’s shoes, just similar to all the other machines I had used previously and everything was ok then. I went ahead and used the machine but my card was not given back to me.   

I didn’t want to leave the machine but needed to get assistance and wasn’t sure as to what to do or where to go. There is no telephone number on the machine to call for help at any time of day. I have never thought about carrying any bank emergency numbers separately.  I’d never thought I would be in this situation.

I was trying to reach the card and retrieve it but just could not get hold of it. If you discover yourself in this situation be on your guard that you could  become a victim and suffer a loss, Somewhere there will be a camera slyly concealed in the top portion looking down on the keypad where you insert your pin.

It is probable that you have been spyed upon and they are aware of your pin number unless you have hidden it. The scammers are waiting for you to leave the cashpoint  so it is unattended whilst you go and get assistance, but in doing that, you are  at risk of losing your card as they could come along and steal it. But no, they are not, they will be retrieving your bank card and going off with it. Once the card is in their possession, and now they have your pin number, you will find that your card is used at another cash machine and the most amount of cash which can be withdrawn in a go will be taken.

You will need to stop at the machine and not let anybody use it. Pull and twist around the area that your card slides into and see if there is anything unusual or unnatural.   Does anything move a little or flick off?

By covering the card insert place with another cover, they can use a little piece of card to stop your card being returned to you.   You may wish to push your card back into the machine so it cannot be retrieved by anyone else and make you time to terminate your card.

The top portion may also have an extra magnetic strip on it with a tiny hole to record the movement over the pin pad. This can be where the camera is concealed. A  very small camera or mobile phone camera can  simply be concealed to record your pin.

If you are in any doubt at all, remember not to walk off the ATM.    If you can’t cancel your cards you may need to request for help from the police who can also look into this event if the machine is found to be tampered with.

The best option to avoid all this trauma is by being more alert to the ATM before using it and if you are in any doubt at all, it may be safer to use a different machine.
